This painting is one of the classical mythological works painted for Phillip II which he himself  described it as poesie.

There was an interesting letter from Titian addressed to Phillip II about this painting, which mentioning that he was particularly interested in depicting the body from both sides. 

The lovers are bathed in the warm light of sunset, where the diffuse softness of the colour holds away. the quality of the colour, which fragments into patches of dazzling luminosity, is a perfect complement to the ecstatic sensuous figures.
